When the first iPhone was announced/released, I only recently started using any Apple products, and I didn’t follow Apple as closely and had no interest in it. Then I played with one in and AT&T Store. But my family was on T-Mobile at the time. We switched to AT&T in Jan. 2008, and my first iPhone was the 3G.
I’ve had every iPhone since. Preordered every iPhone that could be preordered (4-17 Pro, excluding 5s).
Lined up at Apple for 3G and 5s, but was unable to purchase the 3G in my hands due to AT&T system issues. (Got it a week or two later from an AT&T Store.)
Only one (iPhone 5) replaced due to defect. I believe 2 or 3 replaced due to accidental damage. And two were lost/stolen. 5s was replaced as it was shortly after launch. 11 Pro was not as it was only weeks before 12 Pros were released.
Once there were multiple models of iPhone, I’ve chosen the smallest phone with the best cameras, with the exception of the XS Max, which had identical cameras to the XS.
I’ve chosen white or silver over black every time, then usually the “new” color once they started doing that.
I got the largest capacity available until they went above 128 GB, then it varied based on what they offered. Have been on 256 GB for a while.
Starting with the 3GS, my dad got each of my phones once I got the next one (excluding 11 Pro, which was lost and not replaced). After he changes phones, the ones he used often go to another family member, with no consistent pattern.
Starting with the purchase of the 12 Pro Max, I’ve traded in the oldest phone that makes sense to trade in. If doing carrier financing, that’s the oldest phone that gets the trade-in deal.
That’s a lot more info than anyone needed, but it was fun to reminisce.
