Is anyone else here sticking with the 5S through iOS 11?

My 32GB Space Gray iPhone has been a great device, and I really think it is the pinnacle of industrial design for smartphones.

I'm hoping the performance isn't atrocious on iOS 11, iOS 10 performance has really been solid, as long as I'm closing apps.

I felt it's really improved on the latest beta, it's very useable now. It was pretty sluggish on the first few.

Hopefully apple touches up on the bugs. It is still buggy on the 7 too

iOS 11 also runs well on the 6, and the 5s is very close in power with a lower res screen and the exact same type and speed of ram, so I expect it should perform similarly, not significantly less which it strangely seemed like it did in the early betas.

My expectation is that it will be a solid release ultimately like iOS 10 was on the 5 and perhaps better once Apple gets the bugs out of the way and focused on optimisation.

Ultimately I was, persnally, pleased with the performance on the latest beta. Should bode well for the future despite the rocky start.

The 5s is a great phone. Sure there are faster phones, but this need for the newest and most noticeable has become absurd. The 5s is still perfectly serviceable.

It will likely still run ok. It was a beast at release.

However, it is 4 years old in a class of device that it is still pretty much doubling in speed annually (that won’t last forever but it is the reality right now). Have you considered an SE as an upgrade? Same form factor you love but much more modern internals.

I would love an SE, just haven't had a real reason to upgrade, not a "power user" on smartphones, only real things I use it for is podcasts, navigation, and texting and the 5S has been solid for me, although I have noticed stutters and general app lagginess at times, just can't justify throwing a few benjamins to save a few seconds here and there.

Nothing wrong with that. Sensible attititude and sounds you’re good to go for another year on the 5s then. Wait and see what they do with the SE this year.

All I’d say with regard to iOS 11 is that you may be wise, given your use case, to hold off for a month or so and 11.1 to drop for some optimization to come back in. You probably don’t need to though. I’ve read some pretty positive feedback for performance on the 5s, even for the late betas.

I agree with this advice, OP consider waiting until the optimizations hit iOS 11

The 5s is perfectly fine on iOS 10, it runs very well on iOS 10.

The fall is always a bit of a transition phase for apps anyways especially this year with the switch to 64 bit only support

Great point. Apps that use the new APIs and features, and I’m thinking particularly about the various plugins and workflow enhancements the new file provider APIs for the Files app will bring, won’t all be day one by any means. The best will come a little later most likely.

I bought my 5S the day after the keynote for the 6. I preferred its size and form factor (still hate the camera bump) and its served me well these past three years.

My phone is the device whose power I least exploit - its really just an ipod and messaging platform for me - so older tech is not a problem.

But now I'm inclined toward a larger device so will replace it this cycle. I'll likely get the 7 - pick it up the day after the keynote when its price drops - but could be tempted by the "7s" in the unlikely event its base storage is bumped to 64gb.

Not since 2014... it is/was a really nice phone, and I'm glad they've kept it around in the SE (which I hope they continue to update) - but I wouldn't want a small form factor phone anymore

I went back to using an old 5S late last year after my 6S broke outside warranty, and was really pleasantly surprised at how well it still ran, and actually how much I preferred the smaller form factor. The only problem I had was it was a 32GB and I'd gotten used to 128, so it was a bit of a quart/pint pot situation, and I'm sure the fact it was rammed the whole time slowed it down a little.

I was due an upgrade recently and made the obvious switch to the SE - which really is just the 5S reincarnated. It's faster and more importantly, has ample storage - but if I'd had less "stuff" in the first place I'm sure I could have carried on with the 5S just fine.

It's still a great phone! I use a 7 as my daily and a 5S as a backup/music player.
