I am very interested in this phone since first rumors came up. I like big displays, as long as the phone itself is lightweight and thin, without compromising too much on battery life. My S24+ is an example, weighting less than 200 grams.

On the other hand, seems like finally the non pro models are getting 120hz screens, so all the better.

It's about time manufacturers start to find ways to make these big display phones lighter, making them fit better in pockets.

It all depends on how it feels in the hand. I have a 14 Pro Max and while I love the large screen, it feels like a brick in my hand. When I pick up my friends regular iPhone, I immediately fall in love with it because it’s so light. The only thing that has deterred me in the past is battery life. If you wanted battery life you had to go with the larger iPhone. I was looking at the 16e and it’s really close now to my 14 Pro Max.

Will I buy the iPhone Air? It’s going to depend on two things. How it feels in my hand. If it feels anything like a regular iPhone, that’s a win. The second is battery life. If it has the battery life close to my 14 Pro Max, that’s a win. That’s all Apple has to do to win my purchase. there are other things I wouldn’t mind having, but aren’t required.

What I don’t care about is cameras. It could have a single camera lens and that’s fine. Also the display isn’t going to be a deciding factor for me. While I would love to have the always on display and high brightness of the Pro models it’s not going to influence my decision. It would be nice if it has it but if it doesn’t, oh well. Also, 120 Hz doesn’t matter to me. I’d be perfectly fine if it has a 60 Hz display.

Oh Sky Blue. If someone from Apple is reading this, make one in Sky Blue. I would pay an extra $200 just to have it in that color!

These are only my deciding factors. Someone else might have totally different needs, wants, and factors that make up their decision.

My wife could be interested in the iPhone 17 Air but for me to recommend it to her I'll have to see how the camera compares. Getting a high end camera when we upgrade is important to us because we do hold onto phones for a while. She's on a 12 pro right now and will need to upgrade to something this fall. Air or pro are in play.

@russell_314 has pretty much summed it up for me. Although, we have different takes.

I have a tendency to flail my hands and arms some times when moving around. Because I'm not paying attention. At various points in my life this has led to stitches and a variety of scars. When I have a phone in my hand however, my brain tends to kick in and I don't do stupid stuff like this. However, the device has to have some weight to it in order for that to happen.

If I get a really light phone, I'm probably going to send it flying out of my hand at some point. That's fine you might think, the case will protect it. Only…I don't use cases. So, I desire phones with some weight to them. And how that weight feels in my hand is a consideration in buying.

Since my phone is not my digital life (that's the computers I spend many hours in front of each day), I'm not holding my phone up a lot. That factors in to this choice of mine.

So, no. I probably will not be buying any phone that has the name 'Air' attached to it.

I’m sorry, but I just got this image in my head of you flinging your iPhone across the street into traffic.

I can see where the weight would make it more noticeable that you’re carrying it. I usually don’t walk or move holding my phone. If I have to walk somewhere, I put my phone in my pocket and then pull it out when I get there. Sometimes if I’m in a store, I have it out moving around a little bit looking for things. I’ll have the store’s app open, trying to find where a specific item is located. I’ve dropped my phone out of my hand, but that’s just because I’m clumsy. I have to have some type of case. Holding the bare phone just does not feel secure in my hands. It’s smooth metal and glass. My current case is a cheap one from Walmart and it’s rubbery feeling with grips on the side. A bare phone in my hand would be asking for problems. Do you think if you used a thin case it would help you hold onto the phone better? It definitely does for me. I like the look of the bare phone, but I can’t do that.

LOL! :D

Certainly, with my lack of thinking sometimes, that could happen. But it would probably be more of a letting it fly while digging it out of my back pocket to put into the cupholder in my car.

Transferring is the danger for me. I do pull it out, like today I was at the store looking for cilantro for my wife. Texting back and forth (with pictures), but I had two hands on my phone and I kept moving away from people in the produce department (people are dangerous, you don't know when or how they will bump you and cause you to lose your grip).

If say, I'm in the middle of putting my phone down and someone calls me, I might whip around to answer…and there goes my phone. LOL.

In the context of an 'Air' iPhone, certainly a grippy thin case might help, IDK. But, with my current phone (iPhone 11 Pro Max), I already have the weight. I'm just not interested in a lighter, thinner phone. Adding a case to give it some bulk? Why not just go for the heavier Pro Max like what I already have then? Nah, I like a solid weight in my hand. It's substantial and that's the feeling I go for.

PS. In 13 years I have broken two phones sufficiently to merit replacement. You've probably heard that elsewhere because I repeat it, but I think it's a pretty good record. I'd put that up against most case users. Of course there are always those who will respond with "But yeah, your phones are still beat to heck though, right?" Uh…no. They are all actually in very good condition. :)

I can see the danger there, but it doesn’t sound like you do it too often. Is this more of just a worry in your head that you might do it or is it something you actually do with some frequency? When was the last time you actually flung your phone or dropped it? I guess even thinking about doing it once would make me worry.

Yeah, that makes sense, but have you compared how they feel in your hand? Like have you gone to an Apple Store and picked up the regular iPhone? Something about the lightweight just feels better in my hand. Of course that could just be me. I like lightweight watches, but I know other people like a big chunky stainless steel watch they can feel.

I can’t exactly remember how many phones I’ve broken in 13 years but I can guarantee you it’s more than two. At least three screen replacements, and two complete damage requiring replacement. I honestly think it’s luck because some of these were in an OtterBox. Right now my phone has been in this cheap Walmart case for over a year and no breakage. I’ve dropped it several times. I got tired of the heavy OtterBox cases. I really like Mous cases but I think the one I had cracked after it flew off my bike down the street. The phone was okay though. I just didn’t want to spend another $60 or whatever because at that point I was considering upgrading my iPhone. Unfortunately cases aren’t transferable to the new models.

Well, I don't do it at all. The weight of the phones I choose to own is largely responsible for that. Since the 5, I have owned progressively larger phones. My Pixel was an exception and although I love that phone, I do consider it too light.

The last time I dropped my phone (11 Pro Max) was May 2022. I was under the influence of an antihistamine for allergies. I wasn't paying attention. It was the same in September 2015 when I dropped my iPhone 6+. Although in that instance, I only shattered the screen.

It may just be more of a worry. I can concede that. However, again, I like the weight of heavier iPhones. For whatever reason, they feel more substantial to me.

I'm not a fan of smaller phones, and it's primarily smaller phones that are lighter. I do love my iPhone 5, but compared to the HTC Touch Pro I was using before that, it's much bigger. My Touch Pro, however is heavier. And yes, I have both phones still. With my wife's old iPhone 5 and my iPhone 5, I use both as speakers for my MacPro. ;) My Touch Pro is still bootable, but has been getting less and less usable every time I boot it up.

As an additional point, I have both Tungsten and Titanium rings. The Tungsten is heavier of course and I actually prefer that. So, it just comes down to preference I suppose. Although, I'm still not discounting my ability to not be paying attention and damage something (usually myself).

It would be a lie if I said I never dropped my phones, it's just that there's only two I had to have replaced. My lifestyle and career choice contribute to that. I gave up physical labor in 1999 for a desk job. And since 2020, I work from home - permanently. So, there's no real danger to my phones. If I had a physical job, I'd no doubt be using one though - at least for work.

When the 17 Air comes out I’ll have had my 14 for two years. I usually keep my phones 4-5 years, but I am curious so I’ll check out the 17 Air then we’ll see. I’ve been very satisfied with my 14 so the 17 Air would have to be something compelling for me to switch up.

It depends. If iPhone 17 is really that good, luckily I got Upgrade Programme to use next year.

If it’s an iPhone between the normal and the pro… for sure I would not be interested… + the fact it will have a bad camera will kill me… I will get the pro ! Why wouldn’t I pick it for a bit more lol.

.. does anyone know with good certainty what this iPhone17 AIR will weigh exactly ? trying to get the lightest of the two ... 16e or wait for this 17AIR

I'm not interested if Apple didn't give it triple cameras, I need the ultra wide and telephoto!

I really thought I needed the extra cameras for things, but taking photos of dogs and food does not require a triple camera setup.
Nope. It's called Pro for a reason, and I can't imagine Tammy taking a photo of her meal at Cheesecake Factory with her Pro Max is taking advantage of ProRAW or LOG too often.

I'm far from a Pro, or even an enthusiast. I can't help but feel silly carrying a phone with 3 cameras around.

I might be. I'm one of those rare people who actually prefers thinner phones. And if it has ProMotion (and it sounds like all 17 models will), it might be perfect for me.

I honestly don't need more than one camera. I almost never use the telephoto or ultra-wide. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've used them.

I’ll be considering it and will certainly check it out, but it does depend a lot on just how good the camera is. It would be replacing my 14 Pro Max that takes excellent photos, but I am no Pro photographer and don’t use RAW or anything. But everything I pick up my 14 Max it’s like picking a brick up.
Price will also be a factor though, fo Rome it would have to be £100 less then the Pro iPhone at least. A thinner iPhone is NOT an excuse to increase it’s price significantly.

I will have to see what specs it has and compare to my current iPhone and see if it's worth the upgrade.
