Who uses the program caffeine and is it really necessary? I've been on the fence about downloading caffeine, it seems like there would be a built in way of preventing my Mac from going to sleep. I've been messing around with the settings and I can't seem to get my mac screen to stop falling asleep.

it should be pretty easy to stop your machine from going to sleep. go to system preferences > energy saver and set time to sleep to never. although i just checked this on my imac, i can't imagine that it would be much different on other machines.

To change settings for sleep, it's located in the "Energy Saver" area of System Preferences.

And yes, I use Caffeine. I use it because I don't want to always change my Energy Saver settings. I can just turn on Caffeine for a short period of time, and then turn it off when I'm done with it (usually if I'm working on a project or something).

Otherwise, I have to reconfigure all my Energy Saver settings, which gets annoying (because I have them just where I like them).

I consider caffeine to be one of my favorite and essential applications. Its very lightweight and it gets the job done, without having to tamper with energy settings and the like.

I like it because it is faster than going in the system preferences and changing the setting.

When I watch a video, I click on the icon. And when I don't need permanent backlight anymore, I click again. Simple :)

This app is used mostly by Macbook Pro users. When on battery, the screen dims after a short amount of inactivity.

I absolutely love caffeine for my mac (and body)

I think it's a little stupid to have to change your energy settings just to watch a video on youtube or elsewhere on your mac when you don't want it to fall asleep. just click the little cup in the menu bar and you're set to go. seriously one of the most useful little programs I've ever used.

I agree that Caffeine is great. It's very lightweight, free and a snap (well, click) to use. Much quicker and more convenient than messing with energy savings settings every time I want to watch something without my screen dimming.

It would be near the top of my list of must-haves on any Mac laptop. You really don't realize how handy it is until you use it, and then you don't want to be without it.

Caffeine is one of the most useful applications on Mac OS X. You'd be surprised how many places and times you would use it - and it's a lot easier than changing Energy Saver preferences every time you want something to be different.

I guess I've never really needed it. When I'm watching video my Mac doesn't fall asleep and when I'm working on something it's not to inconvenient to touch the track pad or hit a key. I guess I've never been in the situation of, "wow, I sure wish my Mac wouldn't sleep".

I use it daily on my macbook. I like it. As others have stated it becomes a hassle/annoyance changing energy saver mode or touching keypad or touchpad every few minutes or however you have it configured.

I'll join others in saying that I use it and love it on my MacBook Pro.

I'll use it it to keep my display from dimming and turning off when I'm reading a website while using my Mac unplugged on my lap.

Just downloaded Caffeine (just in time for WWDC blogs). Couldn't get it to fill with coffee at first and was a little confused about the settings, nothing that a good old restart couldn't fix. With a restart, the filled icon started working and I set it to start with loggin in Duration = indefinitely.
