Think full body scanner shown in Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie Total recall is science fiction?

Think again. It's happening. I guess they are increasing security but wow...

In a change of plans, the TSA says it will now replace the walk-through metal detectors at airport checkpoints with whole-body imaging machines. Already at six airports nationwide, all passengers are passing through the high-tech machines. (The machines are available at 12 other airports for secondary screenings only.)

The TSA's plans aren't set in stone, but unless there's an uproar, the agency hopes to start installing the machines at airports around the country this autumn.

First image from the movie. Other images are real.

It's actually worse than the Total Recall one. TC's is more private.

While it is old news, it is in the news again this week.

There must be a really big problem with weapons making their way onto airplanes that we don't know about.

On the flip side, the imagers offer the potential to simplify the process for passengers who have to take their shoes, belt, coat, hat, jewelry, etc, off at the scanner and then put it all back on afterwards.

I'm personally "meh" about this. I still adhere to the idea that one should never sacrifice liberty for convenience, but I do not see freedom from having your body imaged in this way as a particularly important liberty.

I really don't have a problem with this if it makes getting through airports faster. I don't see what privacy they're invading. They see your 'naked' body? Boo hoo, everybody has one.

My thoughts exactly! Who cares what they see. I will never see them again anyway.

This security is getting absurd. I am dead set against strangers viewing my naked body, when I do not have any practical choice in the matter. Besides never flying again.

Those whom are for it why not start posting yourself online right now?

This requires the "Alice's Restaurant" approach, but instead of every one yelling KILL KILL, everyone place a piece of metal in their briefs, in the appropriate area.

A work in progress atm, perhaps a stamped finger®™, as mentioned above??

Because your into showing of your well toned body doesn't mean everyone is

Probably the worst job for the person who has to sit there checking the screen as a parade of saggy bits go by.

Analogy fail...

Posting naked images of yourself online for all to see is the same as an image (not a picture) that is viewed by some drone in a room who will never see you or you them. These images are also not stored.

I think shoes would still have to come off, at least with this particular technology, because it's not x-ray.

I'm just waiting to be able to go through the scanner and flip them off. Fun, fun, fun. ;)

I guess instead of metal plates for x-ray machines, you can make your own vinyl plates with your own messages for the body scanners. Or just flip them.

I can totally see lots of controversy popping up when this gets abused some how....say, for example, semi naked/x-ray photos of a celebrity are somehow sold or posted.
