I am coming from an XS, so I kept it far away from the pool/ocean etc.

The 12 Pro has a much better water rating, and I am really thinking I want to take it with me when I go for a dip. First is for safety (phones do get stolen) and second would be to take photos of my kids etc.

Given this video below, and the fact that I do not deep sea dive, should I be safe going on casual dips with the 12 Pro?

Something to keep in mind with any water/dust resistance rating (watches are the other thing that pop into mind), the ratings really only apply until they take their first big hit. After that, there’s really no way to know if a seal has been damaged.

In general, I would no longer fear using the phone in the tub or answering a text while in the pool, but I’m not intentional submerging it.

For what it’s worth I’ve taken my 11 Pro Max into the pool with me a number of times to get some cool underwater pictures and videos. But I just took it into the pool so I could take the pictures and videos. I didn’t keep it in the pool with me the entire time I was swimming. I would be a bit wary of doing that.

One thing to note is that the static pressure of water on a phone just sitting under water is very different and much lowed than the water pressure on a phone moving underwater, especially at faster speeds. You can feel this when you try to move your hand around underwater. There is much more resistance and pressure the faster it goes. I think that it would be much more likely for water to leak into a phone as you move around and play in the water than just bringing the phone underwater to take a few pictures.

Frankly, this is one reason that I love my cellular Apple Watch. I can swim with the watch and leave my phone locked in my car or hotel room without worrying about being completely out of contact, or worrying about my phone being taken.

Don’t go by the clickbait revenue video. EverythingApplePro makes so much money from people who watch his stupid clickbait videos, he can easily afford to buy several replacement phones. Unless you are willing to buy a new iPhone the same day you go swimming, don’t take the phone with you while you swim.

Water resistance is not the same thing as water proof. Chlorine in the pool will (over time) degrade the seals on the phone, as will salt water.
