Wht does i-tunes keep collapsing ?

my i-tunes has done this about 5 times in the last couple of months
i switch on my lappy and it says the i-tunes library folder has been damaged bla bla bla and then when i go into i-tunes it asks me if i want all the music files from my comp copying into itunes, then i end up with about 4 copys of every track after this has happend a few times

what on earth is causing this to happen?

and how do i stop the files duplicating?

How full is your hard drive? If that's full it might be failing to write the status to file and corrupting the last correctly written one. When adding to your library do you copy into the library or leave the files where they are?
