Why are fonts so smal??

Still new to Macs, I'm getting frustrated by small fonts, both on screen and when I print.

I've just printed an e-mail from Mail, and although all my font sizes are set to 12 or above, it printed like in 6 or 8 (very small).

Further, somethimes I receive mail, and the added font size is tiny, when again, all my settings appear to have 12 or 14 font selected.

Any ideas with this, and more importantly how to fixe it??
