Why are HDR photos so washed out?

When I revert to original it suddenly becomes incredibly rich in color and looks 100x better. What is the deal with that?

I don't get that. My gripe with HDR is that I can't tell that it makes one bit of difference on the iPhone. The original looks just like the HDR version.

Noticed that too. They always look the same. Wasn't until I downloaded the ProCamera app and can now really tell the difference between HDR and a regular pic. I've never been able to get apples stock camera HDR to look any different than the regular pic.
