Why are my folders empty on my external?

I have a 1 terabyte external but all the folders are empty only a couple still have stuff. Like photo projects I put together for customers are gone when I click on the inside. I always drag files to them. Some folders are okay but these empty ones should have stuff in them. It's weird, it's like the files disappeared? I'm on Snow leopard by the way. Thanks
