Why are my icons doing this?

Until recently, I used to be able to click Mac HD and the icons would be in columns - the way I like it. However, all of a sudden when I click Mac HD my icons keep going back to thumbnails. How do I save it as one format?

Thanks, guys. It's a real pain for me to navigate with the thumbnails.

Open finder and highlight your HD in the menu bar go to View>Show View Options. Click Always Open in Column View. you can do this for all of the sidebar items.

EDIT*** You need to click the view you want the HD to show up in first. ie: Column View then go to Show View Options.
