iOS Why are Tab Bar Labels Disappearing??

I have a tab bar in my MainWindow.xib and it's all set up right -- the app works, I can switch between them. No problem. They have labels and an image. One problem:

Whenever I switch to a tab, the label disappears?! The icon lights up blue, no problems. Everything *works* fine, but the labels disappear one by one as I go between tabs, never to return. I am perplexed.

Any ideas?
