iPad Why are the apps i download to my iPad downloading to my iphone too?

my icloud is turned off. i'm using the same account on my iphone and my ipad. is that the reason?

i'll downloada bunch of apps to my ipad and the next thing i know, they're on my iphone too.

Settings-->iTunes and App Store-->Automatic Downloads

^^^ - this bothered me too when I got an iPad and had to hunt for the setting. It happens by default if an app is set for both iPhone and iPad..
