So I have a custom ring tone for mail notification which, since iOS 4, that I have set through the sounds options under settings. Since iOS 8 my mail notification always came in with the default Bamboo sound. This was confusing me until I discovered that there is another option for mail notification sound under the notification settings. Why is there two, why does one override the other, and why is it that when you change one it doesn't change the other?

What are the two different choices that you see there?

Settings > Notifications > Mail > Notification Sound

Settings > Sound > New Mail

Settings > Notifications > Mail > Notification Sound

Settings > Sound > New Mail
I see what you mean. I believe one is basically just the default sound, and the other is one that can be different for different mail accounts you have and/or for VIP recipients and/or Thread Notifications so that you could differentiate between them if you wanted to.
