You need to be 18 to buy the iphone and set up a contract which means most kids wont have one (unless their parents pay for it). if your going to trust a kid with an expensive phone then they dont need parental controls

If forum polls are any indication, about 20% of iPhone users are under 18. Even half that would be a lot of kids.

And no, just because they have an iPhone, doesn't mean they're old enough to go to all sites.

Plus there are lots of iPod Touches out there with the same web access...

I think the 18+ is AT&T's rule? Most kids don't have a credit card and since AT&T is subsidizing the cost of an iPhone, most kids won't have the ability to pay for a lengthy contract.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

Their parents get the phone for them and pay the monthly fees.

false they are not parental controls its the credit check most under 18 dont have any credit like me so i when i bought my iphone the plan is in my moms name and i pay everything by using my debit card.

I think the funny thing here is that the vast majority of 'kids' will probably outsmart the parents and get round / turn off these controls ...

haha ya...im 15 and im getting the iPhone 3G and my parents are all for the parental controls...but i know most of their passwords...(there not very "secure" on giving passwords to each other when im around)...so i have my ways...but the thing though is...i don't really care...Im not into looking at that kinda stuff anyways...drugs porno alchoal...whatever doesn't interest me...im athlete i can't do that stuff anyway...

More than likely for the App store. Most kids don't have their own contracts and its under their parents. Even though they buy the iPhone themselves (which they give the money to their parents), it's still alright to have parental locks.

Do you really think only people 18 and up are using cell phones at all? There are kids in grade school that have cell phones! And the only ones that don't require the purchaser be 18 are pre-paid phones. Sure, the iPhone was pricey, but the new one is not. So, there's gonna be a ton of kids getting iPhone 3G's from their parents. And those parents will want to stop their kids from playing adult games and going to adult websites. Thus, parental controls.

And even high prices mean nothing, the $600 Playstation 3 launched with parental controls.

Why bother parenting, let the phone do it for you!

In all seriousness, I don't get it either. If your kid can't handle the phone and the responsibility that comes from it then they shouldn't have one.

Got kids?

Technology is here and used by everyone... and even required by school at times.

The iPhone's access to the web is no different than your child's home computer. Both need parental controls because you can't be there all the time to watch.

i think ppl in this thread are confused as to what the controls are, it means things like blocking out porno sites

Good attitude and good to hear it. Hope there are lots of younger iPhone users who have the same approach ...

Really, do most parents care if their kids (say 13+) look at porn?

Yeah 9 of them. ;)

But really, I'm well aware of what is and isn't required in schools and my post was light-hearted. Still, if you are that worried about your kids and their iPhones maybe they shouldn't have one. I seriously doubt any school will require an iPhone. I've heard of the iPod, but not the actual phone. Most schools restrict kids from using them on school grounds.

Who are you and what country do you come from? I was under the impression that parents would stop their kids from doing illegal things.

<<<<<I'm from the US, obviously. Really, I live in a society where if someone HASN'T looked at porn in their life is considered "weird." My friend got a virus a few weeks ago from looking at porn. His dad didn't care. Lucky for him, his dad is a PC expert. Lucky for me, I have a Mac.

Who really cares if kids look at porn. You'll experience it all someday in your lifetime.

Now if that sentenced was reversed, then it would be wrong.

You can't really say looking at porn causes teen pregnancy's either ;)

How about for the wife/girlfriend?

I love this feature! I am planning to secure my girlfriend's phone, so she can't buy songs and crap on the go without my knowledge! LOL

I got my first cell phone in 7th grade.
I'm 17 now, just graduated from high school.
In terms of the iPhone, I paid for the phone... my parents pay for the monthly service.
