Why can't I delete books from iPad

I can delete them from collection on my iPhone and my MBP but not on my iPhone. I finish a book and I'm not going to read again but can't delete from my iPad. I can stick them in an old book folder but I can't delete them. I'm sure each doesn't occupy much space for the icon etc. but still that adds up. Again I can delete from iPhone but not from my iPad.

Why???
