hi guys. this has just started happening.
any ideas what might be causing it?

Definitely not normal Finder behavior. It looks like you're selecting multiples by using ⌘A. It almost looks like a modifier key is being mistakenly registered as you click on the group, causing the selection to get dropped. I also see a random Quick Look view in the middle of all that, which would indicate the space bar got pressed (or also mistakenly registered).

Does this persist after a restart? Does it still happen using a different mouse/trackpad?

Same thoughts as Ignatius. Based on file renaming being activated, I'd suspect that a drag is being broadcast as merely a click, perhaps from a stuttery Bluetooth device. But if Quick Look is opening occasionally, it seems like there might be some spurious input from a keyboard or other device somehow. (Or from the main pointing device with custom buttons? We have no indication what the main pointing device is, of course.)

Start your long drag with a small horizontal drag to the right. Or, drag from preview pane.
