I've been through a few different video players and can't seem to find one that works properly...what am I doing wrong??

-the newest version of VLC caused memory issues
-MPlayer won't switch to full screen (?)
-Quicktime won't let me skip ahead to a certain section of a movie

What is everyone else using? I've since downgraded to VLC 1.0.5, which is sufficient, but I don't understand how I'm using a brand new machine with decent specs and having all the issues!

Just a guess, but if you're having trouble with every video player out there, I'm thinking the problem lies within the video files and not the player.

What he said.

Are you having the problems with the same file each time? You also haven't said what file type you are trying to play.

The 64-Bit version of VLC 1.1 works perfectly fine on my 27" iMac i5 (with Snow Leopard in 64-Bit kernel mode). 64-Bit VLC 1.02 still had a lot of issues, but the current build runs great.

Agreed that it may just be the files...the Quicktime issue was with an .mkv file, but every type of file I've tried on the 64-bit VLC has caused the same issue, which is documented in the VLC tickets.

The Mplayer baffles me though...I literally tried every movie I had, and none of them would switch to fullscreen when prompted to. I tried every setting within the preferences, uninstalled & reinstalled...nothing works.

I can't do Plex...the interface is just too much.

VLC does have memory leak issues. shows itself when watching a long video. very known problem. hopefully fixed soon. i had to go back to 1.0.5. still runs pretty good.

What do you mean by memory leak issues?

Try Movist. I have found if Movist won't play a file, there is something wrong with it and all other players will have trouble with that same file also.

Alrighty...have been experimenting more.

I didn't realize there was an MPlayer OSX Extended, and an MPlayerX...the former didn't work for me, but MPlayerX is excellent! I think I found the one! :D

As you watch a movie, it continues to hog more and more memory until it starts lagging and stuttering.

Really?? I have my MBP on Thursday and I was thinking on watching 720p movies with vlc and a hdmi adaptor. I already downloaded the last version of vlc and put it on a external hdd. Can I find 1.0.5 on the same site or should I look somewhere else or should I stick with the last version?

Thanks

I like MPlayer OS X Extended but it has no audio on some h.264 files. I'll have to investigate some more.

Movist has the best full screen OSD and keyboard shortcuts.

Actually when I click on that link the download sends me to version 1.1.0.

Which software are you finally using for long HD movies?

Thanks again.

Sorry...they do host the previous versions on there somewhere...

Anyway, happy with MPlayerX now.

Hi again,

So I downloaded MPlayerX and I've been watching a bunch of 720p .mkv movies with it :) At first I couldn't find how to send DTS to the speakers but I found the option in preferences. I couldn't be happier with it :)

Thanks for the tip :)
