Why did Apple stop making painting software after MacPaint?

I'd argue they actually stopped in 2003 with Appleworks 6.

Presumably they saw Adobe as an important enough partner that they didn't want to step on their toes at all.

These days the Markup feature that's available in various places in macOS is decent. It's not quite for art/digital-painting though
