I have been watching and reading some reviews of the original, first generation iPhone 2G just for the fun of it, and a lot of people were saying how much they hated the headphone jack. What was wrong with it? Why did everybody hate it? How did it compare to other devices at the time?

Because it was recessed. It was inconvenient to use with a lot of cables.

The headphone jack was set into the phone and you couldn't use normal non-Apple headphones without an adapter.

*edit* apparently I need to type faster.

And let's not forget it was the only phone of its time that couldn't MMS. ;)

Bet we all forgot that one.

Yes, obviously. The point was - it was the most advanced phone in the world that couldn't do the most simple cell phone task.

The iPhone 4 would be IMO, the first feature complete iPhone bringing multi-tasking and home screen wallpapers.

iOS 2 brought us the App Store (correct me if I am wrong)
iOS 3 brought us Copy and Paste, MMS
iOS 4 brought us home screen wallpapers, FaceTime (iP4), multi-tasking, and useless features like Game Center.
iOS 5 brought us a new Music App, and most importantly, Notification Center
iOS 6 brought us random features like color matched status bars in Apps, as well as new Apple Maps, Passbook, etc.
iOS 7 brought us the redesign, and a lot of new features like Air Drop, Control Center

Of course theres more, but I just got off from work, and am really tired. Waiting for my gf to get home.

3 major operating system updates to order to get the most basic functions. Thanks for pointing that out. Oh and let's not forget it took even one more major OS to change the freaking wallpaper.

And iOS 6 only brought us a failed maps app. Thank god for google maps.
