And keep around the inferior ipad 2? Is it because the ipad 3 and ipad 4 are so similar that it may be easy to get them confused? The ipad 3 should be $399 right now, instead of the ipad 2 IMO.

its because the ipad 4 is coming out as the retina replacement

The 4th gen is an architecture upgrade and will probably not be changd until october 2013, the iPad 2 is cheaper to make due to the non retina display and depending on demand will either hang around for education or be phased out altogether. There was no point keeping the iPad 3rd gen as the a5x would not lower its cost as much as the non retina display does.

iPad 2 is cheaper to make so more profits. Also the iPad 3 is more similar and would eat into the ipad 4.

I'm going to say because the Retina screen is still expensive and they wouldn't be able to make the profit margins they want at the $399 price tag.

I agree it is about their profit margins. iPad 2 must be significantly cheaper to make without the retina screen, so if they can sell it at $400 to people who don't know any better, they'll make a lot more money than they would if they were offering iPad 3rd gen at $400. iPad 4 is basically iPad 3 with a different processor, camera, and Lightning.. it's basically indistinguishable to the masses externally. so iPad 4 replaces 3 because it's pretty much the same thing anyways (I know it will be faster, but they're not really very distinctly different models).

Because the iPad 3 and iPad 4 are identical except for the Lightning connector and a new chip? iPad 4 is a MINOR upgrade. It's not that hard to figure out

actually, ipad 3 was the minor update. sure, its got retina, but its way underpowered. in some cases, ipad 2 is faster. it have crippled LTE support and it didnt support siri from the get go. ipad 4 is what the ipad 3 should have been in the first place. ipad 3 might have sold well, but performance wise, it wasnt apples finest moment. it makes sense leting the poorest performer of the bunch go.

Because they wouldn't know how to price iPad 3.

If they sell iPad 3 at $449, people will pay the extra $50 to get the iPad 4.

If they sell iPad 3 at $399, Apple will not make enough money, and it'll cut into iPad 4 sales. Instead, they kept the iPad 2 at $399. No one in their right mind will buy the iPad 2 at that price, but it serves two purposes - to make the iPad mini a better deal at $329, and to make the iPad 4 a better deal at $499.

In other words, Apple didn't make a mistake in setting the price of iPad 2. It is strategically set NOT to sell, but to make other iPads more attractive.

I thought that beside the new chip and sync port, it is also a bit thinner, no? Lightning connector supposed to allow apple to make thinner advice. I dont understand even if Apple decided to upgrade Ipad in March 2013. Ipad 3 would still sell like crazy till then anyway.

Maybe they just want all their latest device to use the new cable and phrase out production of the 30 pin. It is apple next generation now, Profit only. Who cares about image.

nope not thinner, same dimensions but i'm sure the next ipad will be alot thinner

4th generation is essentially a 3rd generation with two upgrades. New chip, new connector. That's it. There's no reason to keep two versions of it around.
Mini = Cheapest. iPad 2 = Economical full-size version. New iPad = High end full-size version with retina display.

I still wish the price on the Mini had started at $249 or $299 ;)

Same. But for me $30 means no sushi lunch this Friday and next Friday. Oh well.

I think they kept the ipad 2 so developers keep making non retina apps for the mini ?

Since there's 2 non retina iPads out , this gives them more incentive ?

I don't know what I'm talking about sorry

The ratio of all iPads are the same, so there's almost no difficulty to develop for one more or less iPad

Funny all this claims about the iPad 3 being a minor upgrade at its time and its lack of performance compared to an iPad 2.

Lol some people are such fanboys that they persuaded themselves the legitimacy of a 4th iteration of the iPad and the disappearance of the iPad 3 from the Apple lineup.

Wow.

I completely get why they killed off the "3". It's a redundant product with no noticeable difference to the average consumer when compared to the "4".

What I don't understand is why the iPad 2 is still alive. 3 different iPhones, 3 different iPads, two versions of the iPod touch with different features, two versions of each MacBook Pro.

Somebody needs to get whacked with the simple stick before this gets too out of hand.

Seems another practical reason to me.

I think it's fine honestly. People have been screaming more options for years, and now that its here people can't handle it? People can be fickle at times.

iPad 2 is cheap to make. It makes sense leaving it there from a marketing perspective. It creates a sense that the iPad 4th gen is a better buy.
