Why do apps not work on the Apple Watch without them being opened on the iPhone first ?

Annoys me too… One App in particular being the ‘Hive’ App. I don’t always carry my phone and it’s annoying when wanting to turn on the lights in a room using the watch App only to be told “Go and find your phone and launch the Hive App from there first”!
My guess it is to do with security as in 2 factor authentication being one such issue.
