Why do I need a @me.com account? Notes?

I just installed i0s5, I was really looking forward to syncing notes across all my devices. When I went to set my notes to work with iCloud, it asked me to set up an @me account.

Im just a little confused, what does creating an @me account mean? is this my new apple id, will it affect how I get my email on the phone?

why would i need to create an account in the first place to set up. I use gmail for everything and I don't want to switch anything up if I don't need to.

It's just for email. I also use gmail for everything. It will make you an @me email account...just don't use it. Your apple id will remain the same.
