Why do i need me.com email for iCloud

Why can't i just use my itunes username for everything?

Can someone confirm that i can ONLY sync my contents with other ios5 devices if i have a @me.com email account?

I don't use a @me.com email, I use the same one as used in iTunes. Syncing between my iPhone 4, iPad 1, and Mac with no problems.

So Settings > iCloud > Account > Mail is purely for me.com emails and not needed for iCloud syncing of bookmarks, notes etc?

I also had a problem with using my appleID and had to use an email address instead. My apple ID was never an email address it was just ten random characters that I have been using since the apple store first started. This update forced me to use an email address.
