Why do my keys automatically dim? I have my system prefs unchecked for the "auto adjust brightness for ambient light changes"?
 
You need to change the keyboard preferences as well.

Look for the option that says "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" and uncheck it, though its behavior is a little wonky. If you want full control over your keyboard backlight use "LabTick"
