Why do my texts have this *N# in the beginning?

everytime i tex those 3 letter/symbols show up right after idk whats wrong i reboot it any later it comes back

Most curious... Judging from the screenshot, am I right in thinking you've got a jailbroken phone?

When did the problem start?

my apologies its a 3g 3.1.3 jb iphone started afte ri upgraded to 3.1.3

Well this isn't a documented issue, so it's clearly something in the jailbreak messing up. Could you try re-installing the stock software, checking it works, then applying the jailbreak again, rather than upgrading from a jailbroken system? Might not make any difference, but worth a shot.

It's used for SMS Delivery confirmation on some carriers. You can google SMS delivery confirmation to find out more. If you are using a non-standard messaging app, it might have a setting to turn this off.

*0# is for delivery confirmation, not *N# (as far as I know anyway, maybe some carriers are different)
