Why do programs take so long to load?

Hi everyone,

You can see my setup in my signature. When I purchased my MBP I was under the assumption that it would be significantly quicker than my PC. :rolleyes: My PC is a Dell XPS with Duo Core 2.0 ghz, 512 ram and 256 graphics card.

When I open programs they take about twice as long as they take on my PC (i.e. Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Word, Excel.).

Is this just a Mac thing, or could I possibly have some issues? :eek:

Those are some big bloated programs you're loading up. Is the PC a desktop?
 
You've got to tell us what versions those programs are... Office 2004 and Adobe's CS2 and below versions are all PPC applications, not universal binary, so they will be very slow.
 
The only time programs take a while to load for me is when I try to start them immediately after logging into Leopard. Other than that, loading time is pretty snappy. Photoshop CS3 is three times faster than Photoshop CS2 was on my old HP laptop.

My home PC is a desktop - Dell mini tower. I've had it for 2-years.

One thing that was also surprising was the time it took to install CS3...complete install took almost 2-hours.

Maybe I will time the start up time when I get home. I just feel like in theory I should have a pretty fast MBP, but I seem to get the pinwheel often and things load slow. :confused:
 
If it took you 2 hours to instal photoshop then I would say there is a problem with your MBP. I installed the complete Adobe Design suite (Indesign, Photoshop CS3, Illustrator, etc) and it only took about 10 minutes. My programs open instantly, just a few seconds. So that seems strange to me.
 
Those times almost make it look like you have Norton Antivirus running in the background.

That'll make anything that should take 20min into 2 hours of agony.

Yeah... I've noticed that for the first 30 seconds or so after your computer appears to be done starting up it seems to continue running various start up tasks.

I only have one account on my computer though and I never turn it off (only restart when a software update requires it,) so it's never caused me issues though...
 
Can you guys point me to any tests I should run or areas of the computer I should look at. My HD fried about 3 weeks ago and I got a new one - everything is still really slow.

You didn't answer my question. What versions are you using? That has a huge impact on whether or not you have a real problem here.

The program "Onyx" (google search it) should help speed things up too.

Sorry about that.

Currently I have the following installed:

CS3 Master Suite
Office Home and Student 2008
Cyberduck (ftp software)

There you go, Cyberduck ... something there acting like a memory leak.

If the machine starts up ok, and gets slower after a set period of time. Cyberduck is likely the cause.

Some say, clean out the transfer window daily.
 
Hi Guys,

I got home and timed the opening of a few applications.

Illustrator = 25 seconds
Photoshop = 20 seconds
FireFox = 5 seconds
Entourage = 10 seconds
Word = 5 seconds

I guess looking at these times after a restart, it looks like it might be a memory leak.

Interesting...thank you.

Any suggestions on a Mac friendly ftp transfer program.
