OS X is usually wonderful in that, in most apps, the scrolling is by pixel. If you've ever used Windows, the scrolling is "by line" and it's pretty choppy.

I've noticed that this same choppy scrolling is present on OS X in a few apps: namely Microsoft Office 2011 and the latest version of LibreOffice. I was curious as to why this is, and if there's any way of forcing smooth scrolling on such apps?

Those apps aren't exactly optimized for OS X that's why they don't scroll smoothly. If you use Pages you'll notice how it's a lot smoother.

Faces view in iPhoto is especially choppy. I can't think of any choppier part of OS X than this.

I'm running it on Late 2013, 13" rMBP 2,4GHz, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. I don't even want to know how it runs on older notebooks.
