Seems silly, and makes me dislike voicemail even more. It seems with texting voicemail is pretty much unnecessary, unless it's a business/doctors office or someone calling from a landline.

Let me get this straight you hate something because it makes you move your finger or thumb a tab bit more. I think I figured out why America is obese, were bitching about moving fingers now lol

Tell your folks not to leave you a voicemail then. Having to delete twice is an added protection in case you accidentally delete an important voicemail.
 
Probably along the same lines of why you have to move a file on your computer to the recycle bin/trash, then empty the trash before it's truly deleted. To make sure you don't accidentally delete something you really intended to keep.
