Earlier this evening I began my download of Call of Duty 1. After watching the progress bar move little-to-nothing in 30 minutes, I thought I'd check iStat menus for my networking speeds. I was downloading the game/application at 125-200KB/s, or .1953125Mb/s. Awful speed, for my 10Mb cable plan. I normally carry about 5-9Mb downloads during the day, and 9-10.5Mb at night.
I was downloading over my AirPort Extreme's Wi-Fi (Ethernet is always better), but this normally is no problem, as Safari and other applications achieve normal download speeds as I expect them. (Downloading on Wi-Fi because I hadn't bothered running an Ethernet cable to the part of the room I moved my Mac mini to.) I went ahead and plugged in a 30 foot Ethernet cable from across the house, and that didn't fix anything either, same speeds. So it isn't an issue with my router, or the distance from it, interference, etc...
Anyways, after googling about slow download speeds from the Mac App Store, I read on the Official Apple forum that if you clear out your Mac App Store cache, the download speeds will increase. Mind you that I thought that this would be useless, I tried it, and in fact it did fix the speed issues. I went from 200KB/s to 1.3MB/s.
What good is the cache deletion, and why does it affect your download speeds within the Mac App Store?
