Occasionally, when I'm connected to my external monitor and doing dual screen, both screens go off and back on. It takes a second. Everything resumes as normal. But it's disconcerting. I havent been keeping a log, but it doesnt seem to happen with any regularity. Just at random times.

Any thoughts?

More than likely it's your computer thinking there's a change in the monitor setup (removing or adding a monitor). I assume it looks like if you just plug your monitor into your computer and it goes out for a second while it adds the second.

Check your cables, make sure they're tight. If you're using an adapter, maybe you need to get a new one.

so it isnt necessarily a sign of a big problem? it doesnt bother me. im just worried maybe it's a sign of something larger.

This is totally normal, the external display needs to detect the input, and the computer needs to detect the output.
