I wondering why Hollywood does not make similar TV shows like star trek, stargate or Babylon?

Yes even popular movies like the matrix, star wars, Aliens or Predators.

They make other movies and TV shows but nothing similar even popular TV shows like the X-Files or Fringe.

What do you mean by 'Hollywood'?

Hollywood makes movies. Traditional tv broadcast channels (NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX) make television shows. Some of the traditional tv broadcast channels are now a part of the Hollywood studios (CBS/Paramount for instance) but they aren't considered to be 'Hollywood' and neither are standalone companies such as Netflix.

Paramount makes several Star Trek shows: Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy. The second season of HALO started filming in September 2022 as well.

Disney makes Andor and the Mandalorian, Obi-Wan, and the Book of Boba Fett with a few other SW shows in production, such as Ahsoka.

Stargate and Babylon 5 are old shows. Other than a handful of cast members, reboots will require new actors. There has been talk of rebooting both, or some sort of continuation.

Then you have copyright. Who owns it and are they willing to allow the franchise to be messed with in a serial format. Some shows don't ever get made because the copyright owners can't agree.

I'm not sure what you mean about Hollywood, but lets take a look at what's already out there and what's been announced. this is of course not a comprehenisve list but something going off my very weak memory.

Star Trek Picard, Strange New Worlds, Discovery

Babylon 5 reboot - rumors are that this is happening

Star Wars Mandalorian, Andor, Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, Ashoka (in production or planned)

Various: Last of Us, Fallout (in production), Quantum Leap, The Ark

I've not included Marvel, or any animated series, but right now there's a ton of stuff that can be watched right now

May be not the right words but studios making movies or TV shows. You don’t get studios making movies or TV shows similar to other studios even big hit movies and TV shows.

I mean some thing similar to star trek like Orville.

Babylon similar to star trek Deep space nine.

You don’t get much like that in Hollywood.

Well, Orville is technically a spoof of Star Trek.

But what you seem to be meaning would actually be considered akin to plagiarism or a ripoff. Do you remember the controversy between Babylon 5 and DS9?

In today's litigious society no studio legal department is going to sign off on a show that emulates another show. The lawsuits will have them tied up for years.

Babylon 5 proved to be different enough that the controversy quieted down. But this is not the mid-1990s anymore. And quite frankly, on a personal level, I'm not interested in a ripoff/emulation. I'd rather watch the real thing. And no studio is going to produce a show they know will be dead out of the gate. Netflix in particular has no issues cancelling shows.

Star trek deep space nine and babylon yes are both in space and on a space station but the story is very different.

I’m not asking for copy as that is illegal but a similar shows you don’t get many studios doing that.

On a side note for it to not be plagiarism the story will have to be different. The theme may be the same but the story is different.

The Expanse on Amazon Prime is very much like Star Trek, Stargate, Babylon 5.

I can only think one reason is the studies hates making similar spin off as the story will have to be different for it to not be a copy and they don’t want to risk that it may flop.

At least big studios and movies and TV shows that cost millions to make.

Most movies are very similar. Like seriously, every action movie is about how the world is about to end only for someone to save it. 🙄

Once you start noticing the patterns, you realize how repetitive movies are.

My family and I happened to be talking about Fringe just yesterday. John Noble was great in it, and the mind-bending plot was great too. And it had Leonard Nimoy's voice (and cartoon likeness) for good measure.

There are still good sci-fi shows, just little consensus about which are the best. In the days of Star Trek, there weren't many competitors (yeah, there was Lost in Space) so it was easy to focus attention on the few worth watching.

Like Hallmark. Someone suddenly has to go somewhere or gets stuck meets Mr(s) Right, there is eventually some misunderstanding and someone flees then they get back together eventually.

EDIT: Oops and forgot in the beginning they is almost always a breakup, and that person will appear eventually and throw a curve ball. :)
