I have a 2015 5K with 32GB of RAM and when using Lightroom to simply import photos into the catalog the fans in the iMac always turn on and it sounds like it is about to take off like a plane. Why does simply importing photos and not doing anything to them have this affect with the Mac? I only have two browsers open also.

As BlueTide said, there is a lot more going on then simply copying the files from the memory card to your library. Previews, cataloging the photos, and other things. See if the same thing happens if you import the photos directly to a file on your desktop. Likely not.

This would point to processes within Lightroom that are causing higher CPU, RAM, and GPU usage.
