why does it take so long for my PC to sync about 2 gigs worth of songs?

If you've told iTunes to compress the media to smaller bit rates then the slowness is your computer converting the files before transferring them.
Syncing a fresh iOS device for me takes about 5 hours because all my media needs to be converted to lower bit rates in order to all fit on my iOS devices.
