Why does iTunes often show some time remaining when a song stops playing?

Very often I notice that when a song finishes, the "LCD" display in iTunes shows the song as still playing, with some small amount of time remaining (a couple of seconds). The Apple symbol doesn't appear until I press the >>

It only does this for the last song being played, it never does it when there's another to play next.

Any idea what causes this and how I could get rid of it? I'm wondering if it's some kind of inconsistency between a metadata tag containing the length of the track and the real length of the track.

I'm using Apple Lossless in case that has anything to do with it.

I've searched Google for this but found nothing which surprises me a bit as I see this all the time. Difficult to know what to search for though.

For the record, whatever was causing this looks to have been fixed in iTunes 8.
