why does iTunes take up GB space in movies/TV shows ?

I have movies and tv shows in my user music and movies folder but when i add the movies to itunes library it takes up duplicate GB space , whats up with that?

Do you have the "Copy files to iTunes music folder" option checked in Prefs->Advanced?
