Why does MAIL quit, claiming there's not enough space?

I can't recall the exact text of the error message, but every once in a while MAIL will pop up an error window and say something to the effect that I need to clear some space. I click OK and MAIL quits. I then restart it and voila - no problem at all - it runs fine. Then, a few weeks later, the same thing happens.

What's the dealie here?

How much hard disk space do you have free? Anything below a few GB and Mac OS X starts getting antsy about running out of memory. Below 1GB you're asking for trouble.
