just curious, when you open up disk utility, does your macbook, mbp, ibook, pbook or any other laptop attempt to make a cd ejection even when there's no cd/dvd inside? this has me a bit worried like something isn't right...
 
Yep, PowerBook does it. I believe it's the laptop's attempt to make sure whether or not there's something in the drive (a CD that may not be mounted in the Finder may be a disc that needs to be repaired by Disk Utility). Disk Utility is just checking for anything Finder might have missed.
