Why Does My Iphones Screen Only Work When Its Plugged Up Or In Use?

I apologize in advance if this questions already been answered

For the last couple of days my Iphone screen has been acting really funny. I've been having an issue with what i would describe as it going to sleep and not wanting to wake up.

my iphone screen works as long as its:

A) plugged into a wall charger
B) plugged into a computer via usb (yes Itunes recognizes it)
C) in use

however if I disconnect my phone from the charger or the computer and let the screen go black (go to sleep) for a few seconds, it wont respond when i try to turn it back on. I've tried resetting the phone using the sleep/home button combo with no luck. I've also tried reloading the firmware (3.1.2) with no luck. The kicker is while I cant get it to respond when the screen goes to sleep using the buttons, if i receive a phone call or a text the screen will come back on no problem, and it'll work fine until i let it go to sleep again. Guys this is leaving me drawing a blank any help is appreciated.

Sounds like either water damage or other hardware issue.
