This is really irritating and something that has bothered me for a long time, I just hadn’t gotten around to acknowledging it. Almost every time I take a picture it turns it the opposite of the way it should be faced. This is extremely frustrating especially when I turn it landscape and it flips it to portrait mode. There is absolutely no reason this should happen. I then have to go in an edit almost every picture I take to turn it so it is facing the right way.

Make sure the camera is oriented the way you want it (horizontal or vertical) before snapping the picture.
If the iPhone is a bit tilted, it doesn't know what you want

If a picture is taken with the camera level (horizontal) yet the picture comes out rotated, then there's something wrong with the orientation sensor inside the iPhone

You're taking pictures in portrait but you have to turn the phone to landscape to make them display in the proper orientation (or vice-versa)?

In my experience, the only time this happens is if I'm taking a picture pointing the camera downwards or upwards…after all, my iPhone 8 doesn't know which way I'm looking at it.

No I’m taking pictures in landscape and turning the phone sideways (landscape) and they’re still coming out where you have to turn it sideways to see them.

I am doing that and making sure I have it securely horizontal and they still come out portrait. But not portrait to where you can see it, portrays shaped but picture is sideways.

Can you post a sample? What kinds of things are you taking photos of? Like if you take a photo of a person using portrait orientation (up and down), the person shows sideways in camera roll?

Do you have the orientation of your phone locked?

No when I take pics turned sideways they appear in portrait. And yes I have rotation lock on but that shouldn’t effect the camera

Mine sometimes come out the wrong orientation but I'm thinking it's usually due to the angle, up or down, of the phone when the pic was snapped. I suppose I could blame my folio case for having metal and magnets in it…those mess with the compass.

The only time this happens to me is if I'm taking a picture of something where I have to point the camera down (eg. something on my desk, on the floor, etc). The way you can avoid that is to hold the camera up, like you're taking a 'normal' picture, orient the phone the way you want, watch the little thumbnail to make sure it pivots to match your current orientation, then lower the phone to take the picture you're trying to take. When doing that, keep an eye on the thumbnail to make sure the new, ambiguous orientation doesn't confuse the phone.

I am having the same problem but on my camera screen the bottom right hand corner the camera is on its side vs regular. I have tried taking rotation off and everything.
