Why does OS X default to integrated video when plugged in?

This is a major issue - things like Safari scrolling, expose animations, etc are all chunky on integrated, and if you switch to discrete, then its buttery smooth!

So what's the logic here? Saving power while you're plugged into the wall to give you worse performance all around?
