Why does OS X keep deleting my .DS_Store files?

Running 10.6.8, I wonder if any of you have ever seen something like that.

So the owner of this Mac asked me for help because his desktop items appear in standard alphabetical order after restart.

When I open a folder, a .DS_Store is created, and immediately moved to the .Trashes folder. When I move it back to where it belongs, it goes right back to the Trash.

What the hell is going on here?

• Remove all items off the Desktop
• Restart (don't open any finder windows after restarting)
• Run this http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32748/iremove-.ds_store-files
• Repair permissions (don't open any finder windows)
• Restart
• Put items back on desktop

I don't know if this will work, but it's a good place to start.
