The question is, why does safari take so much RAM.

I'm asking this because, one day I was using safari it was use HALF A GB OF RAM
 
That's not much at all. Parallels takes up 1 GB+ of RAM on my MBP. Right now with 5 tabs open, Safari for me is taking up 350 MB. And I have the Norton toolbar. Do you have any add-ons or anything? Are you playing flash?
