Ok, I know it goes down for updates and maintenance, buy why? Why can't they just upload the new page? I'm guessing it has something to do with if someone added something to their cart and then something about that item changed. But is this the only reason? Is even a reason?

I'm asking this because I may be creating a page with a shopping cart and l I'm trying to get all the info I can.

My thinking on this is that they have hundreds of site references to different products and each has to be updated. Since all pages cannot be upload simultaneously and instantly, they take the store down to do updates. Also, maybe they do manual checks to make sure they didn't list the new iMac for 12.99. It is just much cleaner to take the site down in my mind.

The downtime attracts attention and buys time to get the Akamai network populated with the current content.

So if I'm setting up a site with only about 5 products and they are all on one page, and I don't have to worry about populating an entire network, then I should be fine with just doing it on the fly?

I ask this because this is for a small local musician. He wants to sell his CDs on a website. I don't except this site to get a lot of traffic, so I don't want him to lose a customer because the store is temporarily down even if it is only a few minutes.

That would be fine ;) You don't see Amazon go down when they release new products on a store, so I don't think you should worry.
