On the Air the A19 Pro will have reduced GPU performance, also only has 1 camera so how is the Air taking advantage of the A19 Pro? If the regular A19 was in the Air would that give it more battery life?

If a CPU is faster, it also means it can be throttled down for heat/power purposes and maintain similar performance to older versions. So if the CPU can do more things per cycle, with fewer cycles, it equates to getting the same amount of work done with less power.

It's fine for almost everyone except gamers.

Agree with orev. Performance and efficiency are often bedfellows. Apple basically stated in the keynote that the pro chip is more efficient, so it's the better choice for a power-constrained device.

Pro chip has more onboard cache. This will improve performance of everything including gaming. They cut out a GPU core probably to save power and realistically the Air will quickly throttle during gaming due to thin design.

The cut down version of A19 Pro used in Air has the same CPU and GPU count as regular A19. So dropping down to regular A19 wouldn’t save any power.

The power-efficiency benefits PLUS it allows them to market the iPhone Air as more of a "premium" device... The $999 price point being closer to the 17 Pro's $1099 than the iPhone 17's $799.

So whether it "needs" the A19 Pro chip or not, I'd imagine part of it is for marketing / branding purposes as well.
