This is really annoying for me.

Play radio or music on my iPhone and then AirPlay it to HomePod.

Phone rings. Surely sensible option should be for HomePod or iPhone to think that if I used my phone to cast the music or radio to the HomePod I probably want it to stop when my phone rings.

Instead the noise of the phone ringing plus the radio makes Siri dead as a post so I end up shouting like a madman at it to stop before it gets the message.

Agree with you. Should be offered as an option, since all the devices know the whereabouts of each other.
It's not as elegant as it should be, but I made a Mac shortcut to "silence all" speakers. It's quicker than yell to Siri.

I've found its far field speech recognition multichannel filtering insert marketing tech term to be early good when the HomePod is where all the sound is coming from. I can have it blaring and talk normally (to the point I can barely hear myself) and Siri hears me as if the room was quiet. If anything its counterintuitive to talk normally when you'd normally be yelling over music.

When there are actual other people around talking loud I've found it less sensitive. Its should pretty much be canceling out the noise its making from itself though.
