Why doesn't iCloud stay on in iPhoto??

I am having an issue with iPhoto on my Mac. Every time I load it it asks me if I want to turn on iCloud. And then I have to wait while it activates and downloads all 1,000 pictures in my photo stream. Can anybody tell me why this is happening? If I go to Settings > iCloud > iPhoto is checked and under options I have Photo Stream turned on.

It is tiresome! :mad::mad:
