Why doesn't mail.app update unread message count?

I use GMail IMAP in the mail application. Everything works great but one thing I noticed is that my mail unread count doesn't update if I read something on my iPhone. The only way I can get the application to update is if I quit it, then reopen it. If I hit "get mail" it doesn't update.

Is this normal?

It's definitely not normal, but I'm having the exact same problem and can't figure out a solution.

Anyone have any ideas?

I've had this problem forever, not just since 10.5.6.

Go back to the area you want to post in, the big list of all the threads, and there should be a "new thread" button on the top left similar to the "new post" button on this page.

Dumb question, but you're force-syncing mail right? I've found that GMail doesn't always catch IMAP changes very quickly and sometimes the mail on the phone/GMail web app/desktop mail app all need a refresh to catch what changed.
