I bought a male/male connection to hook up my mbp to my TV and the desktop only shows up on my TV screen. nothing else just the wallpaper. Is there something i need to click on to watch my movies? or browse the internet?

Have you tried dragging the application from your laptop's display to the TV?

O snap I didnt know thats how you had to do that it worked thanks :)

Look in your system preferences under display settings. You can set set it to mirror what is on your Mac or have it as a second external display (which is what you have now)

Sweet that makes it a lot easier. Now the next question is what kind of plug do I need to run the audio from the mac to my home theater in a box. I figure i need the red and white but is there a plug that is special for the mac to convert the wires?

you can also do optical (digital) audio over the headphone jack.
If you just want stereo audio though, as you described, then there is nothing special you need to obtain, just a mini headphone plug to RCA red and white cable.
