Anyone know why Newegg doesn't carry Mackbook Pros anymore? Also are there any online stores that do but don't charge tax? I live in NYC.

Amazon collect sales tax in New York don't they?

I know recently Amazon and the state of North Carolina have had a spat over sales tax. I seem to remember New York being involved with them now but why would they choose to fight with North Carolina and not New York?

Try Amazon, Power Max, (see their ad, below), and MacMall for starters

I got mine from MacMall, with additional rebates. Just keep in mind people sometimes have customer service complaints and trouble getting rebates from them.

Places like amazon are not tax-free, they are just not required by law to collect state sales taxes. You are still required (yeah, i know) to pay the sales tax on these items come tax day.

i didn't know that...i'll have to remember to keep all my internet purchased receipts so I can't tax myself even more come tax time....i'm being sarcastic in case that wasn't clear

Apple's New servers/multi-million dollar office space will be in Charlotte, NC... Maybe that has something to do with taxes in North Carolina.

I lived in NC for 7.5 years and they very much so have taxes there. Research Triangle Park or RTP is a pretty big area that has major corporations footprints. Sony, Cisco, Verizon all have major corporations there. Its a growing IT region and real estate is available and not as expensive. I would assume those would be some of the factors. Plus the people they have to service it have a lower cost of living = lower wages most of the time.

Items Shipped to New York State
Effective June 1, 2008, Amazon.com LLC will begin collecting sales tax on items shipped to destinations within the State of New York as New York has enacted a new law requiring out-of-state sellers to collect and remit sales tax based on advertising. Amazon has filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of this provision. However, as required by the law, we must still begin collecting New York sales tax beginning on that date.

Please note that if you place an order prior to June 1, 2008, your Order Total may not include an estimate of New York sales taxes, but those taxes may still be charged if your order is readied for shipment on or after that date.

The lawsuit was dismissed in January.

Try MacConnection. They are based (or were the last time I bought from them) in NH where there is no sales tax. Dunno if that'll do the trick for you or not, but if nothing else, I've found they have excellent customer support.

i never have to pay tax with amazon but with newegg i do, weird they both ship from cali..
